Dr Nicola Fitzgerald is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who works in Melbourne, Australia. She is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Her interest in medicine in the Pacific Islands began with a placement at Vila Central Hospital (Port Vila, Vanuatu) in 2008.
She has subsequently worked as an obstetrics and gynaecology senior registrar and consultant at Lautoka Hospital (Lautoka, Fiji), and as a lecturer at Fiji National University in 2012-13.
Nicola has since worked in Luganville, Vanuatu as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, and in Fiji and Kiribati as an educator for obstetrics and gynaecology interns and registrars.
Nicola has found that one of the most difficult parts of working in the Pacific is the number of women who come to the hospital with advanced cervix cancer. She found it heartbreaking that so many young women, who often had small children, had incurable disease. She stared the PICCSI Project to make cervix cancer screening and treatment more accessible to these women, and decrease their chance of developing cancer.
