Recap: PICCSI 2018 Pilot Program: Fiji

PICCSI hosted its first cervical cancer screening and treatment program in Fiji in August 2018.

Women aged 30-50 came out in great numbers at five locations: Tavua, Rakiraki, Sigatoka, Ba and Nadi.

Every eligible woman was screened for a number of strains of HPV (humanpapillomavirus: a virus that causes cervical cancer) on the spot, and pathology samples were returned to Melbourne, Australia where VCS Pathology also checked for HPV.

A number of women who were found to have pre-cancerous changes were treated on the spot.
